And then there were two...

AUGUST 18 - The Crossing

Sadly, five days ago in Lake Louise we said goodbye to Paolo and Bev as they decided to stop hiking the Great Divide Trail and bussed back to Vancouver. Bev's nagging hip injury had gotten worse and she had stopped enjoying the hike so after much soul-searching and discussion with Paolo, they decided to call it quits. So now it's just Christy and me trekking through the mountains on our way to Mount Robson. We miss both of them and really noticed it on the last section of trail which had us hiking through some very remote areas.

We left Field last week and hiked through the western area of Yoho National Park, up and over Amiskwi Pass and did not see anyone else on the trail for several days. Just before the pass, Christy said to me, "Brad keep your eye out for wildlife because I smell something funny."
I looked at her strange and mere seconds later, charging down the trail towards me, were two young grizzly bears. They hadn't seen me and appeared to be playing or racing or something so I shouted out and immediately they skidded to a stop about 30 feet away. Christy and I both pulled out our bear-mace, but after a quick sniff and look at us the bears ran off into the forest. We continued on, loudly and cautiously but never saw them again. But the area is ripe with berries and we saw bear scat often.

After that scare, we hiked further that day than expected but the beautiful blue-sky sunshine kept our spirits high. The next day we took on the role of explorers as we headed up on the David Thompson Heritage Trail, an original fur-trading route into BC 200 years ago! We enjoyed the first bit of the hike but as we climbed towards Howse Pass, where we would cross the continental divide again and re-enter Alberta, the trail became very overgrown and difficult to walk on. In fact, the next day of hiking as we descended from Howse Pass we walked for more than 6 hours, covering a mere 10 kilometres, struggling up and over hundreds of fallen trees while wading through the flooded glacial water of the Howse River. Quite the adventure!

Tomorrow we head off towards Jasper and only 3 weeks left on the Great Divide Trail. The weather forecast looks good and our legs and feet are feeling pretty good... just time for one more steak dinner tonight!

Hi Brad & Christy: We are sorry to hear about Bev's hip hope all will be well. You guys are amazing and we think of you all the time. We will be seeing you sooner than you think. I have cherries frozen from the tree for a pie for Christy and probably apple for Brad. We will have a great visit and BBQ. I am still trying to convince Tom into making the car trip to pick you up but his leg has to be elevated and I am sure the van ride may be too long. Anyway, our prayers are with you guys and keep trecking. We miss you. Talked to Roberto and Juanita and of course Roberto says "when are Brad and Christy coming to see me." He told me Brad is the funnest guy I know! Love Mom XXOO

Hi, yesterday I started at the beginning of your trip and read all of Brad's descriptions and all of the comments, and studied all of the magnificent pictures. Vicariously, I participated in all of the thrills and wonders that these magnificent surroundings provide, and the fears and anxieties that you faced with the mace accident, the face to face with bears, the terrific rains and fording strong current waters, and finding yourselves LOST even temporarily. There's enough action packed stuff in this three mont trip to rival any book I've read lately. Can't wait for the video. It should be a winner!

Love,

St. Pete Grandma

Hi Brad and Christy,
Angela here, back at work on the 29th floor in downtown Calgary. Good to hear that you two are doing well and sorry to hear that Paolo and Bev had to quit. We had quite the adventure after you guys left us at Marvel Lake. That night, my Dad, Harry, started feeling ill. I believe it was a stomach flu. He was feeling feverish and lethargic that evening but after a good nights sleep, he seemed to feel better and declined the offer of a helicopter ride back to civilization. That night we camped at Howard Douglas Lake and he was feeling bad again, not able to keep down any food. The next day however, he chose not to take the Sunshine Shuttle down to Banff but to continue on. He kept saying "I'm not a quitter". Maybe not, but certainly stubborn enough. He just didn't improve and wasn't eating so when we got to Highway 93, instead of heading up on to the Rockwall Trail, we called it quits and headed for R&R in Penticton. Our two little guys were happy to see us and we had a great time with them in Penticton.

I'm interested to hear how you fared in the White Goat Wilderness and whether you camped at Michelle Lakes. Great site, by the way.

All the best,
Angela
