First Section Done!

JULY 18, 2006 - Crowsnest Pass

10 days down, 50 to go!
No lightning storms, bears, blood-thirsty mosquitos or pepper spray in the face could keep us from finishing our first leg of the Great Divide Trail...

We are in the little town of Coleman in the Crowsnest Pass on highway 3. Today is a rest and resupply day after finishing a mostly brilliant first section of the GDT. We "splurged" on the nicest motel in town and went out for cheeseburgers and ice cream!

Spending an entire day without having to put my heavy pack on feels like heaven... giving all of the little aches and pains a chance to heal before we head out on section 2. Speaking of section 2, due to some changes to the trails in this area resulting from industry/construction, we have to find an alternate route to get back up into the mountains. We are looking over maps and getting some local advice... but the first day or two out of Crowsnest Pass could be a little interesting. But first, one more ice cream before we hit the trail again!

SPECIAL THANKS to:

Ranger Jeff Smith, who gave us some much-needed directions in the maze of ATV trails north of Lynx Creek campground!

Shawn (from Crowsnest Lake), who gave us a ride from the trail into Coleman... much appreciated after a long, hot day of hiking!

Hi! you four, was great to hear from Brad today. I know you are all careful but just be extra careful.... We miss you and think of all your food preparation and Christy cooking skills, should be fun. I had a great visit with Juanita and Roberto July 12 to 15, drove back on Sunday. Went to a Ukrainian BBQ Buffalo Burgers, Bob & Lorraine there too. Went for a swim in Skaha Lake. Take good care all of you Love Mom

Hi Brad & Christy;
Just wanted to let you know that I've been thinking of you, following the updates (the pepper spray was quite a story) and feeling inspired to do some hiking in the coming weeks (Ella refuses to be in the backpack more than an hour...she's a bit of a wanderer herself). Brad I've always been impressed how you find a way to follow your dreams and live some fabulous adventures. Hope this finds you all well! And a little update for you... Ella has been pooping in the pottie. Yahoo! I guess we all have been climbing mountains...some of the developmental kind:-) Take Care!
Kristi

Well Done Bev and Paolo! The bear sounded a little scary but I bet you've encountered worse on a saturday night in Sauchiehall Street! Shame Brad used up all the mace before your encounter! Good luck with the rest of the trail, post more photos the scenery looks amazing!!!

Hi Paolo and Bev (and Brad and Kristy). Wow sounds crazy out there. Glad to hear you are all doing well, despite some minor set backs. We are off to Mexico tomorrow so we won't be able to check in for a bit but we'll be thinking of you (While we sip on our Margaritas.) Mom and dad say hi too. Mom and dad are here and just had a look at you're website and are amazed at the scenery. Stay safe, Love, Adriano, Sandra, Matteo, Gemma, Mom and Dad
